CarneySweeney are planning consultants for the £270m redevelopment of the North Star site in Swindon. We are helping to deliver an out-of-centre leisure and retail destination that will bring significant socioeconomic benefits and cement the area's reputation as a key regional attraction.
The new North Star complex is adjacent to the established Oasis Leisure Centre and is expected to bring more than three million additional visitors to the site. Arranged in two mixed-use buildings linked by a covered atrium, the 12.57ha development will accommodate retail units, restaurants and cafes, a 130-bed hotel and a range of high-quality leisure venues.
The complex will include one of the UK's largest real snow ski slopes, a 12-screen cinema in the rotunda building, bowling lanes and a 27,000 sq ft trampolining facility. Enhancing the visitor experience will be a new public square designed to guide pedestrian flow and provide a venue for a variety of seasonal events.
Energy efficiency is also central to the development with robust sustainability principles applied to design, materials, transport, ecology, water management and energy usage. A key proposed measure is heat reclamation from the ski centre equipment that can be utilised either within the development or connected to a wider district heat network.
The detailed planning application for the regeneration of this site was submitted just two months after outline planning was approved. Once complete, the project will provide a huge boost to the local economy and provide world-class leisure facilities for the whole of the region.
