St George's Urban Village is a major mixed use, heritage-led development in the heart of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter. The area's world-famous artisan heritage is protected as a Conservation Area with over 200 listed buildings, and operates today as a creative hub, home to 500 jewellery businesses.
Gerald Sweeney led the planning strategy for residential components at St George's for Seven Capital. This comprises a phase of 318 new residential units including townhouses and supporting infrastructure, as well as the conversion and extension of the historic Kettleworks warehouse building into 300 apartments.
Significant planning and heritage constraints had to be addressed, relating to the 140,000sqft former warehouse building. We led a hands-on process at pre-application stage and public consultation in order to gain local support for the necessary demolition of parts of the historic building to enable a viable scheme, alongside the retention of the finest heritage elements.
St George's is a key project in Birmingham's city centre's regeneration, encouraged by enterprise zone status, and has been instrumental in bringing residents back into the heart of the city.
